If we could sit down together and enjoy a lengthy conversation about each of the performance readiness levels, Performance Level R4 would be the shortest. there are some general things to keep in mind though:
* First, don't wait for perfection to celebrate the accomplishment of getting to this level. We are talking about high levels of performance not perfection.
* Second, when followers reach this level for a task, leaders often refrain from acknowledging the accomplishment and immediately announce another activity or issue that needs to be worked on.
* Third, R4 is not some ultimate destination that we want our employees to achieve for all of their activities.
Admittedly there are days when responding to any other performance readiness level does not seem humanly possible. The fact is we, leaders and followers, function at a variety of performance readiness levels for the many different tasks and responsibilities that we have. As learning, living beings we need new challenges, changes and growth.
The importance of identifying these four performance readiness levels is critical to effective leadership. Performance readiness levels can help leaders make decisions about what leadership styles will be most appropriate.
